In 1920 Anthony Silva opened his first desiccated coconut factory in Giriulla, a major coconut growing area in Sri Lanka.
Today, nearing a century, Silvermill remains under the meticulous management of the Silva family (third generation) who remain faithful to the art and craft of expert growing, perfect plucking and quality processing of coconut products. The art and craft of manufacturing is complimented by the latest technologies to provide the most innovative range of coconut products that are manufactured under strict hygiene conditions.
Silvermill remains in the forefront of technological innovation - starting from the mid 1960s when the now world famous 'Bounty' Bar trials were conducted by Mars Incorporated at the Giriulla manufacturing facility, Mid 1980s when together with Nestle Lanka PLC processing of coconut milk powder commenced for the first time in Sri Lanka, late 1980s when the company obtained pioneering status from Government of Sri Lanka for continuous drying processes of desiccated coconut etc. The list is too long to mention and hence we fast forward to 2012 to the latest award from Government of Sri Lanka for pioneering the Value Addition of Coconut Water in Sri Lanka.
In 2007, making use of its vast resources of coconut shell generated from its operations, the company forayed into the emerging sector of Renewable Energy, more specifically Biomass energy solutions. This endeavor placed Environment and Global Climatic Changes in the forefront of the organization's agenda, and all its activities are now geared to promote a Greener Planet.
Silvermill Group of Companies have recently been restructured for the creation of long term shareholder value and is broadly divided into two sectors : Food & Beverage and Renewable Energy.
The Group employs in excess of 1350 workers, mainly from neighboring towns and villages, and many have worked in the organization for generations. On a matter of principle, Silvermill will not employ minors and will not discriminate on gender, ethnicity or religion. Since its humble origins in rural Sri Lanka, the organization has remained firmly committed to the upliftment of the living standards of the people neighboring its manufacturing facilities at Giriulla and Mirigama. Silvermill actively engages in a wide range of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects through its Silvermill Community Outreach Program.
